Julio Calderon is one of the 27 pushcart operators in Downtown Crossing whose permit will expire at the end of this month. Calderon, who has operated pushcarts in Boston for over 20 years, filed a lawsuit against the City of Boston and the Downtown Boston Business Improvement District on Monday, saying that they had promised him he could stay in business until the end of the month. This lawsuit resulted in a 60-day extension granted by Mayor Thomas Menino for all pushcarts in the area.

An online petition to support these vendors was created by Robert Grover of Weymouth, M.A. on the website Change.org. The petition shows that the business improvement district is forcing pushcart vendors to update their pushcarts and merchandise in an effort to revive, or gentrify, the area. The petition has gained 750 signatures as of this afternoon.
